What Is a Registered Agent in Washington D.C.?

A registered agent in Washington D.C. is the designated individual or entity authorized to receive service of process, official legal documents, and correspondence from the D.C. Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) on behalf of your business. Every LLC and corporation registered in the District must maintain a registered agent with a physical D.C. address at all times.

Your agent accepts court summons, subpoenas, and other legal notices and forwards them to you promptly. They also receive compliance reminders and other official correspondence from the District.

Washington D.C. requires your registered agent to have a physical street address in the District. P.O. boxes are not permitted. Your agent must be available during regular business hours to accept documents.
